60-mile Sport Car Race Goes to Missourian

-From the June 10, 1963 Des Moines Register
Indianola, Ia. – Art Bunker, 35-year-old Kansas City foreign car dealer who once quit racing, won the 60-mile closing feature of the Greenwood Roadway sports car meeting Sunday after two of the leaders faltered in the late stages.
Bunker, almost lost with the rest of the pack through the first 11 laps, took the lead on the fourteenth and wheeled his Class F modified Porsche 1600 across the finish line almost 30 seconds ahead of the field.
He was timed in 46 minutes 45 seconds to an average of 77.14 miles an hour for the 20 laps over the twisting three-mile course. An estimated 10,000 were in attendance.
Earlier, Dr. Curt Gonstead of Monroe, Wis., put his Lotus 23B through track-record laps to run from the field in the first 11 laps. The Wisconsin chiropractor hit 81.33 miles per hour on his fastest lap, the eighth.
Bad Spark Plug
A faulty spark plug brought Gonstead into the pit going through the twelfth lap. Dick Doane of Dundee, Ill., then took the lead for the next two laps as Gonstead vainly attempted to get his car started. A dead battery left him there.
Doane, meanwhile, broke a fan belt and he too was forced to the pits with Bunker taking over on the fourteenth lap. From there on it was the winner’s race.
Earlier in the race, another Porsche, driven by Gunter Havenith of Chicago, was hot on the trail of both Gonstead and Doane until he ran off a curve and damaged his car on the ninth lap.
Dennis Henningsen of Mason City was involved in the only other crash when he lost control on a curve and went over an embankment, damaging his car. Neither driver was injured.
Schoeneman Wins
    A. Cecil Schoeneman, Sioux Falls, S.D. lumberman beaten Saturday by his fellow townsman, Gordon Stewart, tooled his O.S.C.A. to first place in Sunday’s opening 15-lap race, averaging 64.86 miles an hour. Stewart blew his engine in Saturday’s triumph and did not compete Sunday.
Richard Anderson, Overland Park, Kan., commercial artist, collected a back-to-back triumph in his Lotus 7A to capture the second race with a 71.05 mile an hour average.
The third race went to James Spencer of Racine, Wis., who brought his Triumph TR4 across the finish line with a 72.48 mile an hour average time. He was second in Saturday’s race for Class C and D production outfits.
